You must give some time to your fellow men
As all of you know two of my good friends here on DA as well as many others have suffered from breast cancer. Last year I did the deviation below for our beloved :iconjunkbyjen:
I also sponsored Danielle :iconmoonbeam13: in her walk for the cure.
I have decided with some help from a few friends to hold an art auction.
All proceeds will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the cure [link]
Some will go to Danielle to sponser her walk and the rest will be donated to the foundation.
All information can be found in my journal here [link]
If you can donate, bid, or pimp this in your journal I would be very grateful.

"You must give some time to your fellow men. Even if it's a little thing, do something for others - something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it."
Albert Schweitzer (1875 - 1965)

Much Love
Lourdes

Always in my heart :iconjunkbyjen: :iconmoonbeam13: Love you both!

:iconjunkbyjen:'s "Think Pink" contest has started please visit her journal here [link] to get the details.

:bulletblack: A FEW EXAMPLES :bulletblack:

New Orleans Folklore or Mardi Gras and Fat Tuesday?
Just the name Mardi Gras conjures up images of drunken, bead-wearing revelers dancing through the streets of New Orleans. But how, and when, did this huge mid-winter party get started? Here's a look at the history of Mardi Gras throughout the ages and across the nations.

Historians tell us that the ancient Romans probably kicked off the Mardi Gras celebrations. Their mid-February festival known as Lupercalia honored the god Lupercus, alternately known as the god of fertility and the god of agriculture and pastoral shepherds. In either case, his party definitely had Mardi Gras-like qualities, including days of feasting and drinking. And a little enjoying the "pleasures of the flesh", probably, too -- in fact, the term Carnival, often synonymous with Mardi Gras, is derived from the Latin expression meaning "farewell to the flesh."

Like most of the ancient Roman and Greek festivals, Lupercalia was adopted and adapted by the Church as a way of subtly converting the local pagans to Christianity. The carnival-like celebration of Lupercalia thus morphed into a last "fling" before the beginning of the Lenten period. Lent refers to the 40 days of pertinence and purification celebrated between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. During Lent, the religiously faithful refrain from a number of indulgences of the "flesh", including eating meat.

Voodoo/HouDoo What is it?

Louisiana Voodoo, also known as New Orleans Voodoo, originated from the traditions of the African diaspora. It is a cultural form of the Voodoo religions which historically developed within the French, Spanish, and Creole speaking African-American population of the U.S. state of Louisiana. It is one of many incarnations of African-based religions rooted in the West African Dahomean Vodou tradition and the Central African traditions. They became syncretized with the Catholic religion and Francophone culture of South Louisiana as a result of the slave trade. Louisiana Voodoo is often confused with – but is not completely separable from – Haitian Vodou and southeastern U.S. hoodoo. It differs from Haitian Vodou in its emphasis upon Gris-gris, voodoo queens, use of "Hoodoo" occult paraphernalia and Li Grand Zombi (snake diety). This emphasis has marked the culture of Afro Diaspora, francophone Louisiana within the Western media. It was through Louisiana Voodoo that such terms as gris-gris (a Wolof term) and voodoo dolls were introduced into the American lexicon.

Marie I was believed to have been born free in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana about 1801, the daughter of Estranged Prince Charles of France and a Creole woman of color whose mother had been an African High Priestess. This fact alone would give her the title of "Princess" if only as an honorary title. On August 4, 1819 she married Jacques Paris, a free man of color who had emigrated from Haiti. Their marriage certificate is preserved in Saint Louis Cathedral in New Orleans. Jacques Paris died in 1820 under unexplained circumstances. He was part of a large Haitian immigration to New Orleans in 1809 after the Haitian Revolution of 1804. New immigrants consisted of French-speaking white planters, Plantation Owners, and thousands of slaves, as well as free people of color. Those with African ancestry helped revive Voudou/HouDou and other African-based cultural practices in the New Orleans community, and the Creole of color community increased markedly.

Of LaVeau's magical career she carried on the practices of her mother's people at night in deep ceremony. Many came to see her perform, from local people to people who had heard of her and traveled great distance to see her. She was said to have had a great snake she named Le Zombie after an African God.

Oral traditions suggested that the occult part of her magic mixed Roman Catholic beliefs, including saints, with African spirits and religious concepts. Thus forming a NEW Religion called Voudon.

Marie Laveau was reportedly buried in Saint Louis Cemetery #1 in New Orleans in the Glapion family crypt. This fact is in dispute as the final resting of "Maman Marie, The VooDoo Queen." Some believe it to be a ruse to protect her final resting place, while others think it could be her daughter, Marie II. The tomb continues to attract visitors who draw three x's (XXX) on its side, in the hopes that Laveau's spirit will grant them a wish. Whether she rests there or not, it is obvious that Marie's Spirit does indeed live on in History and Legacy.
